The Manitoba Dental Assistants Association (MDAA) began on August 26, 1968, when five charter members from the disbanded Western Canada Dental Nurses and Assistants Association met to form a new provincial association. The inaugural meeting took place on January 25, 1969, at the International Inn, now the Victoria Inn, during the annual MDA Winter Convention, where members voted on the constitution and officially established the Manitoba Dental Nurses and Assistants Association. The name was changed to the Manitoba Dental Assistants Association on March 30, 1982.
In February 1969, the association started pursuing certification for dental assistants in Manitoba. On July 26, 2006, the Manitoba Dental Association introduced by-laws requiring all dental assistants working intra-orally in the province to be registered, certified, and licensed, with annual registration fees and continuing education. A special general meeting on September 28, 2006, confirmed these by-laws, ensuring that all dental assistants in Manitoba must be registered with the MDA.
